I’m not a huge fan of flavored vodkas. Most of them give me an instant headache and I’ve also assumed it has something to do with the sugar content involved. Even the Red, White, and Berry from Smirnoff that I love has a one drink limit before the headache pain comes on. A few weeks ago a friend who goes through the same issue, recommended the Smirnoff Zero Sugar Infusions Vodka line. I gave it a try on our beach vacation this weekend and can I just say, wow! Not only is the Watermelon + Mint (can’t speak for the rest yet) tasty but no instant headache! It’s sort of sour but then refreshing thanks to the mint. This isn’t sponsored by the way, I just like sharing things that make me happy. At the beach, I mixed it with a key lime sparkling water, which was tasty on its own and a perfect beach cocktail. When I got home though I wanted to try throwing it into a cocktail that I’d shake up for a summer happy hour.
With yesterday being #NationalMartiniDay, I decided to put it in the classic Kamikaze cocktail. If you’re unfamiliar it’s a sweet vodka martini essentially, though they’ve always reminded me more of daiquiris. A Kamikaze is just vodka, lime juice, and triple sec. That’s it. It’s clean, sweet, and a bit sour. Substituting out plain vodka for this Smirnoff Watermelon + Mint vodka upped the sour, which I love and helped cut through some of the sweet. Then with the mint, citrus, and watermelon combo, it became a refreshing and cool cocktail that fits right in with the summer heat. I never thought I’d be a martini person in the summer but this has me swayed. You’ve just got to try this if you’re looking for a light but boozy sip for summer.
Watermelon Mint Kamikaze Martini
The Kamikaze is so simple to make and we love a low ingredient summer cocktail. It’s fancy enough to be the star of a summer party but also easy enough to be made when you want to relax after a hot day.
Shake for 20 shakes or until you feel the cocktail shaker get ice cold on the outside. Strain into a chilled coupe or martini glass. Garnish with a watermelon ball and a shaving of lime zest.
That’s it! I love simple but delicious cocktails. They make hard days easy and hot days cooler.

It was so nice to find a flavored vodka that didn’t instantly put me in headache mode. Which when you talk making cocktails for this website, I sometimes get ideas in my head that I’d like to try but don’t have the right spirit infusion ready. Nor do I want to wait a couple of weeks for it to come together. This has been such a lovely find that has me super excited. I’ll have to try a few other of the new zero sugar flavors to see how they fair. Though I might just sip on this cocktail all summer instead because why mess with perfection.
What are you wanting to sip this summer? Do you get headaches from certain sugar products like me? If so, would you want a list of liquors I’ve found that work for me? Let me know all your thoughts down below!
PS We’re talking instant headaches that hit before you finish your first cocktail. Not the ones that hit you the next morning after a few too many!
