August is tomorrow and the dead heat of summer will be here. Even though it’s the hottest month of the year, at least here, somewhere about halfway through the month I start getting fall fever. I try to fight off that feeling by diving into food and cocktail options that hit the transition of summer to fall flavors. Like pineapple and whiskey. Fruity and bright but with the cold weather warming sensation you love from whiskey. That’s where this beer cocktail, Mo & Mez comes in. This IPA cocktail is hopped up with Mosaic hops but has been mixed with mezcal and passion fruit syrup. Giving it a tropical vibe but with a bit more heaviness and smokiness that we lean on in fall cocktails. IPA and mezcal blend beautifully together that make this the perfect end of summer cocktail.
MO & MEZ IPA COCKTAIL
You can get fancy and serve this up in tall beer can like I did by simply using a can opener to take off the top of the lid. Though I’d serve any drink you put in a can with a straw, rather than asking guests to sip from a cut open can.
Into a shaker of ice, you’ll shake together 1.5-ounces of Mezcal, 1-ounce lemon juice, 1/2-ounce passion fruit syrup, and a dash of bitters. Shake for about 12 shakes.
Passion fruit syrup is pretty easy to come by in these summer months and a handful of brands make it now. If you find it grab a couple of bottles if you plan to take this cocktail further into fall as it might be harder to come by once summer passes.
Strain into a pint glass (or opened beer can) halfway filled with ice. Top the rest off with an IPA, preferably something with mosaic hops. I like this Voodoo Ranger from New Belgium. Garnish it with a lemon wheel.
If you’re about to get onto me about ice beer, just trust me. Does a beer cocktail need ice? Some can get away without but other I don’t think so. This is one I prefer with ice but do as you please.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED FOR A MO & MEZ
A mezcal and beer cocktail mixed up with passion fruit syrup for a tropical swing on a mosaic hops IPA cocktail. Thus it's called the Mo & Mez.
- 1.5 ounces Mezcal
- 1 ounce Lemon Juice
- 1/2 ounce Passion Fruit Syrup
- 2-3 dashes Citrus Bitters
- 6-8 ounces IPA
Into a shaker of ice, you'll shake together 1.5-ounces of Mezcal, 1-ounce lemon juice, 1/2-ounce passion fruit syrup, and a dash of bitters. Shake for about 12 shakes.
Strain into a pint glass (or opened beer can) halfway filled with ice. Top the rest off with an IPA and garnish it with a lemon wheel.
It’s hoppy, fruity, and smoky. Mezcal is a bit of my go-to spirit in this summer to fall transition because of those sweet and smoky profiles it brings to the table. You’ll find an array of tropical flavors coming through in the spirit and that’s what makes it so wonderful to pair with summer fruit. However, throwing something as hoppy as IPA on it helps balance out how sweet the fruit and spirit can get together. Which allows for a tasty beer cocktail.
Now to wait till 8 PM to be able to sit outside and drink it on the patio. Ha. How are you gearing up for the fall to summer transition? Are you just riding the summer flavors all the way until you can pumpkin spice up your life?
Yes, I did just make a Spice Girl’s play on words. Let me know down below what you’re sipping in these last weeks of summer.
