An update looking at my first half marathon and the future for Elle Talk in 2018.
Wooooah! Unless you follow me on Twitter or Facebook you might not know I’ve been training for a Half Marathon. Last we talked, here, I was walking into my first 10K or as the race was called Half Marathon Relay. I realize, now, that I never wrote a follow up post to that race. Don’t worry, I finished with a 1:20 time. Somewhere after that race, I sort of lost my heart for writing about the topic. It was a mix of not knowing where I was going next and you guys were losing interest in it. It’s cool, I totally get it! So I let it go and chose to do minor updates through social media.
However, I miss these posts now that I’ve had some time away from them. I look back over my running journey that started right here on Elle Talk on May 16 2016, announcing I was going to do my first Sprint Triathlon. I hadn’t run more than a 5k at the time and I did so, very, very poorly. In that year and half time frame, I’ve done 2 Sprint Triathlons, 4 – 5Ks, 1 – 10K, and now, 1 Half Marathon. Back in June I decided, that I wanted to do the Aramco Half Marathon. It’s a huge race with 27,000 people showing up to participate in the Chevron Marathon or Aramco Half. I thought surely if I had 7 months to train, I could do a half marathon. So I shared it on social media to keep me accountable. Come November, I decided I was terrified of what would happen at Aramco. I decided then I would quietly sign up for another half marathon, a month out. Running is mental and I needed to know I could do it or at the very least what I needed to do more of. So this Sunday, I laced up my sneakers and took off to Galveston for the Santa Hustle. Sound familiar? I’ve run the 5K for it 3 times. Ya’ll I was nervous, so nervous. I kept calling this my silent half marathon because I wasn’t speaking of it, incase it didn’t end well! I am grateful that I had my husband running with me to help guide me on this first half. I genuinely mean it when I say I couldn’t have done it without him. I won’t go into full details of the run but I left it all out on the course. I wanted to finish in under 3 hours and I did with a 2:50 and knees the size of grapefruits. I’ve never pushed myself as hard as I did on Sunday and to say I’m proud of myself, it just doesn’t do it justice. I learned a lot from that race and I’m incredibly glad I did it. I feel much better walking into Aramco in January. Plus it was neat to see people who follow my athletic journey super surprised when I finished my first half marathon a month early. Something about this one, was really special. I think it’s the first time I’ve felt like a real runner or athlete. Which is dumb because if you get out and run, you’re a runner. Simple as that. However, I never thought I would be here. I never thought I was capable. I am happy to say, I was very wrong.
ELLE TALK UPDATE 2018
So what’s happening with Elle Talk in 2018? I’ve got two more posts for 2017, a roundup of Elle Talk’s Best Recipes 2017 and a New Year’s Eve cocktail. After that, you would expect my readers survey to open up the New Year and a look back at my Favorite Elle Talk Moments from the year. However, 2018 will start with us shutting down Elle Talk…..for a week, possibly two. Don’t worry, it’s not for good! Elle Talk has been a beast this year. We’ve acquired a ton of new readers and have seen a growth I couldn’t have predicted for only my second year of blogging. For that reason, as a little gift to Elle Talk turning 2, I’m giving her a much needed upgrade. We’re moving platforms to be self hosted, we’re also getting a fresh design that’s easier to navigate, and new branding.
That’s not all that will be changing in 2018. In 2018, we’re going to scale back cocktails. Risky, I know. However, in 2018, I’m looking for quality over quantity. I want better quality cocktails, better quality recipes. Sometimes a recipe takes three weeks to flush out when I only predicted two. I want it to be okay to let it take it’s time to become the awesome concoction it needs to be and not feel pressured by “Blogging 101” saying you you have to upload three times a week to be successful. That’s another thing, when I started Elle Talk, I prided myself on not being 100% niched like “Blogging 101” tells you. I’ve niched down to just about only cocktails. I miss food and I miss lifestyle. So, I’ll be bringing them back and bringing them back better than I’ve ever done them. Food will be met with the same passion and detail that my cocktails have seen. You’ve probably already started getting a glimpse of that in the last month. Lifestyle will look further into my life as not only someone heading into their 30’s but as a blogger. A little behind the scenes fun if you will. Plus, I’ve heard you..you want Georgia back. She’s coming back too.
A little more detail on the food and drink side of this website. Another thing I’m looking to start slowly introducing in the new year is Menus. Menus are going to be week long series once a month where I create and style out a themed three course menu. Example being: Take Out Night. You’ll get a full look at how to make a Sake Sangria on Monday that pairs with Air Fryer Crab Rangoons on Tuesday and the main course of Under 20 Minute Lo Mein that posts on Wednesday. Each recipe being perfect on their own but even more fantastic served together. The week will end with the entire course in a full table scape with entertaining tips and fun details to add to your night in. I really hope you’ll enjoy this new concept because I’ve had it in the works for months. It’s probably going to be my new favorite introduction for 2018.
Lastly, I’ll touch on this. This last year I’ve spent a lot of time working with some fantastic brands. I’ve gotten to work with dream companies to create recipes for them that I’m extremely proud of. I’ve also built up a photography and styling portfolio that excites companies and has gotten me a lot of positive recognition. The joy of it for me is the chance to work one on one as a photographer, writer, stylist, and recipe creator to flesh out various companie’s products in a new light. That really freaking excites me to pieces! I wanted to say thank you, for taking on the sponsored content this year. Where most bloggers get backlash for sponsored content, the majority of my readers have embraced it. Walking into 2018, I’m hoping to keep the sponsored train going. So if it’s something you don’t desire, I do apologize that it will not be coming to a halt. To those who don’t care, truly, thank you, because it’s something I truly enjoy about blogging.
That would be it, for now. That’s the Elle Talk updates for 2018. I’m sure more will happen in 2018 that I can’t even begin to predict. I’m sure somethings will come and go as they always do. However, since I won’t be around at the New Year to say this, thank you. You’ve made this not so little space on the internet turn into a real dream. I’ve enjoyed every minute of writing, creating, photographing, and taste testing for you. Okay…maybe not every minute of the taste testing. I don’t always get it right the first..second..sometimes even the third time. Thank you for being such a magnificent light in 2017 for me.
Now, on to 2018. I promise, I’ll try not to be as long winded next year…
though I think that was last year’s promise too.
