Happy Birthday, Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling! Back when I was a kid I was obsessed with Harry Potter and still find myself in a state of awe with the series. At any given point I'll randomly pick up a Harry Potter book (Order of the Phonix still being my favorite) and read it all the way through. As I've gotten older the books have changed in what they mean to me, and I find new undertones every time I re-read it. I think that's what makes it an incredibly timeless series. It's relatable to everyone regardless of status. With the launch of a new book, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, today I thought it was time to celebrate.
Now that Harry Potter is 36, he's got 3 children, and a day job, he's become a little bit more relatable than the 17-year old who killed Voldemort. Spoilers? It's been 9 years people. Just like any tired and over-worked mid-thirty-year-old with a birthday. I think Potter just wants the day off to grab a drink at the pub and watch Quidditch with his family. So I'm taking us back to the Leaky Cauldron to mix up two Harry Potter favorites; Butterbeer and Firewhisky. Take a seat, potions class is in full session!
If your fan of the series you know Butterbeer is served multiple times through the books. It can be served hot or cold and is described to taste like butterscotch, cream soda, and sugar cookies. Today I'm using Flying Cauldron's Butterscotch Beer. Everything about this screams sweet, so to mellow it down I'm adding the addition of "firewhisky" to the drink. Firewhisky is known as a liquor that causes a burning sensation when drunk. If that doesn't scream muggle cinnamon whiskey, I don't know what does. Adding this all together makes for a sweet and spicy, Buttered Fire Whisky, that is perfect to celebrate a new Harry Potter book with.
However, the fun didn't end there because this is Harry Potter we're talking about. If someone isn't walking away with singed eyebrows or the entire room on fire, did we even magic?! (Don't really do that.) With a tap of the wand and quick "Incendio" (or some 151 and a match) we're catching this drink on fire. As the 151 burns, it also caramelizes some of the butterscotch soda and gives it this delicious smokey flavoring it didn't have. Plus Harry has to have something to make a wish on. My suggestion? Wish for an early retirement, Potter.
With that, I'm giving a cheers to my favorite fictional character. Happy Birthday, The Boy Who Lived!
- 4 oz Cinnamon Whiskey
- 12 oz Butterscotch Soda
- 1 oz Bacardi Rum 151
To catch on fire divide your 151 between the two glasses. Slowly layer the 151 on top of your drink using the back of a barspoon. Using a stick lighter, light the top of the 151 on fire. Let the 151 burn off, if it is still burning after 10 seconds blow the fire out. Let the drink and glassware cool before consuming, else wise you will burn yourself. We suggest using a straw to consume the drink after it's been blown out and cooled.
Warning: You do not need to light this one fire, you can drink it as is. Please do so at your own discretion, and I am not responsible for the outcome. You can get hurt if you are not careful. 151 is very flammable. If you do do this, and I'm not saying you should; use a heatproof class, do not use too much 151, do not let it burn for an extended time, use a stick lighter to light for a lower chance of burning yourself, blow out the fire before consuming, and let the glass cool before consuming. Got it? Just use caution and common sense.
This drink was just a lot of fun to make, and it tastes delicious. Warm, sweet, and magical. Grab one a Buttered Fire Whisky and tell me down below, what is your favorite Harry Potter book and why. I'd love to talk Harry Potter with you for the rest of the week, so let's make it happen!
