5 Tips For A Cozy Fall Living Room
A look at how to refresh a living space for a cozy fall feel using World Market decor.
Welcome into my home! I'm getting really personal today and inviting you all into one of my favorite spaces of our house. I spent the last weekend sprucing up my living room for fall and getting it cozy for the season. The living room is the thriving center of our home after all, it deserves some sprucing! The only issue I have with our living room is that while on paper the square footage seems large, the useable space is actually not. Think long, skinny, and awkward length walls. Add in the fireplace is a depth of 3.5 feet from the back wall. Yup! That's a lot of wasted unusable space! So, when it comes to decorating I aim to create all the things I love about fall in our little space that can make big impacts. Today I'm sharing with you, my tips on how to create a cozy fall living room.
Fall is the season I could live in for forever and I've known that since I was a kid. That's why I get so excited (I mean, it is August 4th...I'm a little early) to start decorating for it. Also get so immersed in the season. It always starts with the beautiful changing leaves, then pulling out the cozy knit sweaters, and then out comes the hot cider. By Halloween I'm a big gushy autumn mess of joy. So I headed out to my Cost Plus World Market Webster to grab a few decor items for small space living that could make those big fall feelings come alive!
5 DECORATING TIPS FOR A COZY FALL LIVING ROOM
Warm and Functional Decor
Welcoming fall means also welcoming cooler weather. As soon as I start to get the slightest hint that the Texas heat is soon to be fading off I pull out all my favorite blankets. Where most people tuck blankets in a chest by a couch, I like to display them. Using a wood ladder, I fold up blankets with different textures and patterns to tuck in the bars. Letting them be free and accessible to anyone who would like to use one. Before it's cold enough to light fires in the fireplace I keep a piece like this against the bricking. When those colder fall nights roll in though, I tend to move it over by the television so the blankets don't start to take on the smoky smell from a fire place.
Elements of Nature
I love pulling inspiration from the very items that make fall, fall. As soon as it's cold enough to have fires we do! You might think we are crazy for loving to have a fireplace while living in Texas...and you might be right. However there is nothing like crackling logs while wrapped up in a blanket. Using my love for that I like to get a head start by filling baskets with firewood to leave by the fireplace to bring in the nature of fall. If you don't have a fireplace, this look will work just as well next to an entertainment stand. Plus it transitions into a winter decor item which is just a bonus to me!
Keeping with this theme I refresh the shelves by filling votives with pinecones and dried potpourri to bring in those fall scents. I like to keep potporri up high as to not overwhelm a sitting space. You can also use pinecones in coffee table trays for filler around candlesticks!
While I love the airy and brightness of open windows during the day. I start to pull away and love the look of a dim soft glow coming from candles and edison bulbs around this time of year. Maybe it's from being mesmerized as a kid by the orange flickering faces of a jack-o-lanterns but something to me about soft orange lighting is fall and cozy! I'll pull out my favorite hurricanes and votives and fill them with LED candles (so if we forget to turn one off, no harm) and I'll exchange out some of my lighting for softer bulbs. I'll sprinkle these lights throughout the room in different areas to light up any dark corners or shelving. I personally love lamps that use edison bulbs for a rustic feel.
While I love for a living room to feel like it's a cozy place to hang out, I do love a good conversation started. Since Holidays and events come at a much more rapid pace this time of year, I'll pull out a chalkboard to be laid into the mantel decor. (You can also work it into your entertainment stand decor or if you have a gallery wall) Then I'll decorate it as a count down to the next big holiday or event. Since we're still in August, I'll be counting down to the official first day of Autumn. 48 more days to go, folks! A few other holidays to look forward to in fall are Rosh Hashanah, School Starting, National Frappe Day, Halloween, Dia de los Muertos, and Thanksgiving.
Making a space feel warm and inviting doesn't have to be difficult. It always breaks down to using what you already have and adding in details to bring together a welcoming space. Things like changing out the throw pillow for warmer colors and adding in textures we associate to the colder months like knits & faux fur can easily spruce up a space and bring things together.
One of my favorite and easy ways to transition my decor to fall is to use dry black beans, corn, or lentils to fill large vases and votives with. Our living room is open to our dinning room, so I use this as a way to connect the two room. I fill our table with talk votives of these dried goods and then bring that same concept into the living room. I like the earthy element it adds to the room and how it feels like the true autumn harvest has arrived!
Are we even suprised my coffee table tray is full of cocktail books? Probably not.
I love how all of these little details and come together to create an cozy and warm living space. There is nothing better than bringing in all of those memories as a kid and turning them into decor inspiration to thrive in.
