I’m not really a picky eater but I do have two foods that I can’t stand.
- Raisins. Every since I was given my first mini box of Sun-Maid raisins as a child, I’ve hated them. Craisins, yeah sure, I’ll get down with that. Grapes? I love grapes. Wine, even better. However dried grapes can take a hard pass.
- Maraschino Cherries. I don’t want them on my ice cream, I don’t want them on my cocktails, I just don’t want them. However, fresh cherries? Fresh cherries are my jam.
I can’t get enough of fresh cherries when they are in season. B and I will easily go through a bag in a day. We both grew up eating them outside and spitting the seeds into the yard as children. Though as adults we have moved on to putting the seeds in a bowl but there maybe nothing better than eating them on a hot day still. Which made me think, we needed a cherry cocktail. With the end of summer coming on and what will be the start to a new season, I wanted something that could be sipped in the upcoming transition. With bourbon about to take an uptick in the coming cooler months. I thought what better than to take summer fruits and warm spirits to be combined into this Cherry Bourbon Sour. It’s tart, sweet, and a little woody, which to me sounds like just the perfect drink for an end of summer night. How about you?
CHERRY BOURBON SOUR
Sour cocktails are pretty easy. It’s just citrus, simple syrup, optional egg white, and a spirit shaken together with ice. So really if you aren’t a bourbon person per say you could run this with vodka instead.
Into a shaker you’ll muddle 6 fresh cherries (de-seeded) with simple syrup. Then you’ll add in lemon juice and bourbon. Give it a good 10 shakes, pop the top and add in your egg white. The egg white in this gives it that creamy and frothy head. It’s just delightful and I highly recommend trying it at least once. Give it a hard 15-20 shakes to get the egg white frothed up. Fine strain this cocktail into a chilled coupe glass or into a whiskey glass filled with lots of ice.

THINGS YOU MIGHT NEED:
When I serve my sours with egg white, I prefer using a frozen glass with no ice. That’s just my method but if you are an ice lover with your sours, go crazy with it. This drink is tart, sweet, refreshing, and just really lovely for summer. When I started making it, I didn’t realize how much I would enjoy this cherry cocktail. Thus I’m naming it my underdog of the summer cocktails I’ve made this year. Is it too soon to do that? What have you been sipping on this summer?
