Rio Olympics Cocktails & Menu at Harold's Taproom + Contest!

A look at the Rio Olympics menu being served at Harold's Tap Room in the Heights Houston. Plus a chance to win a VIP seat for the entire month of August in their Name A Cocktail contest. //

Over the last few weeks, Brad and I have had such a wonderful time watching the Olympic trials and the prep for the 2016 Rio Olympics. We are those people who have the TV on twenty-four seven during the Olympics, catching all of the sports we can and cheering on Team USA. The sports I get really excited about are gymnastics, fencing, rowing, and diving. Brad is cycling, swimming, sailing, and athletics. We even have a tradition of going to our favorite bars and watching when local Team USA athletes hit their sports and cheering them on with our fellow Texans. This year we have 33 Texans heading to the Olympics, so you know we've got a lot to come together and cheer about.

That's why when Harold's Tap Room located in The Heights Houston, invited me out to try their new Rio Olympic menu that they will host during the games, I was thrilled. If you follow me over on Twitter you know how much I love Harold's and their southern hospitality team. Located on the bottom level of Harold's, the Tap Room hosts home to a full bar with specialty cocktails, beer and wine on tap, and bar snacks. Not to mention a slew of TVs so you'll never miss any of the Olympic sports. Harold's is even offering up a chance to win a VIP seat to watch the Olympic games all through August!

{More details on the contest for a VIP seat at the bottom of this post.}

For their Rio Olympics menu, they are bringing out two new food specials centered on the theme of a healthy Olympic athlete. They are serving up an Oven-Roasted Jerk Chicken with Jasmine Rice and Sea Island Red Peas, and Gulf Fish with Local Vegetable Ragout. These dishes were unexpectedly light yet packed with flavor. The chicken was juicy, a little spicy, and fell off the bone. The fish, which was Snapper straight from Galveston, was delicate and rich. The great thing about Harold's is they work with local and regional vendors to provide you with fresh food from places you know. Grasping the concept of a meal for an Olympic athlete rang true as these dishes were light, healthy, flavorful, and perfect to fuel these hot summer days. I don't know about you but in these 100-degree temps, I need meals that keep me light on my feet!

At the bar, the Rio Olympic theme continues with three new cocktails made with Brazillian Cachaça Liquor a.k.a. Brazillian Rum. Cachaça is made with sugar cane rather than molasses and is the most popular distilled liquor of Brazil. Which is the perfect way to pay homage to Rio's roots.

First up is the On Your Mark, made with Avuá Prata Cachaça, Cynar, ginger, and pineapple juice is a complex version of a tropical drink. This drink is tart and sweet with its melody of flavors. This drink served in a coupe is the perfect sipper for those intense moments during the Olympics.

Next up. is After The Race and it is a cocktail worth celebrating with. This dessert-Esq cocktail is sweet and cinnamon spicy. Made with Avuá Amburana, Allspice Dram, and topped with homemade whipped cream and cinnamon shavings. The allspice and whipped cream in this remind me of all my favorite desserts growing up as a kid. After Team USA takes gold, a few of these are perfect for celebrating with!

Last up is when the fun really begins. Harold's Taproom is hosting a Facebook contest right now for a lucky winner to win their very own VIP spot at Harold's Tap Room for the entire month of August to watch the Olympic games. Say you walk into the bar being packed? No worries they'll clear your seat and let you watch the Olympic game of your choice. So what do you have to do to win this VIP spot? Come up with a creative and fun name for this third cocktail (pictured above) made from Avuá Prata Cachaça , muddled beets, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Dipped in golden dehydrated sugar cane juice to make an Olympic gold ring.  It's light, sweet, and perfect in the middle of these hot days. The most clever name for the beet cocktail wins the VIP spot! This was definitely my favorite cocktail of them all and I can't wait to have one while watching my favorites compete.

Can you do better than my Can't Beat US? Must be 21+ or older to enter.

A big thank you to the staff at Harold's Tap Room for hosting us to try their delicious and flavorful Rio Olympic Menu. I know we will be back to cheer on those special Texas athletes who made it onto Team USA. I'm specifically looking forward to Simone Biles from Spring, Courtney and Kelley Hurley (Irish Setter lover as well!) from San Antonio, Simone Manuel from Sugar Land, Brittney Griner from Houston, and Kassidy Cook from The Woodlands!
