Tomorrow night is the Opening Ceremonies to the 2016 Rio Olympics. If you live in the central time zone like myself, the ceremonies begin at 6:30PM and goes on for roughly four hours. I mentioned last week that Brad and I are big on the Olympics. So with that said, can you guess what our Friday night plans will be? If you guessed making easy vodka Brazilian cocktails to play BuzzFeed's Olympic Opening Ceremonies' drinking game, then yes, you have popped the cork on the bottle.
Outside the fun of watching great athletes compete from all across the world, I love getting the excuse to experiment with a culture's different flavors. When I was looking through Brazilian recipes, I came across a drink called the Caipiroska. It's an incredibly simple and popular three ingredient cocktail; good vodka, limes, and brown sugar. It's so simple that you can make the drink in the glass you'll use and requires minimal muddling. Which if that didn't have me already sold, trying one definitely did it for me.
A Caipiroska is a tart, sweet, and low-calorie cocktail, which makes for a perfect summer drink. The fun thing about this popular Rio drink is that it can be made with any fruit you like. I really like the tart element of a Caipiroska so I'm using limes but other popular Brazilian options are kiwi, leeches, and pineapple. If you take the lime route remove the "ends" and white flesh in the middle of the lime, as they can lead to a bitter tasting cocktail. Also, did I mention to use good quality vodka? Any cocktail using few ingredients like this demands quality liquor, so don't skimp out. I promise it makes the difference, so lets get into it!
- 1 Lime Chopped Into Small Pieces
- 1 tbsp Brown Sugar
- 2 oz Vodka
Doesn't that sound fantastic! This is becoming my new favorite cocktail. Sometimes you just need a simple yet delicious drink to sip on. Let me know in the comment down below, are you watching the Olympic Opening Ceremonies? Do you have any Olympic traditions?
